Pool Pump Air Leak Repair: Replumbing and Valve Replacement

When a pool pump is pulling air, the problem isn’t always the pump itself. Air entering the plumbing can cause the pump to lose prime and cause the system to not operate properly.

Recently, Aquarius Pools was called to diagnose an air leak affecting a pool’s circulation system. After inspecting the equipment and plumbing, we determined that the plumbing and valves in front of the pump needed repair.

Diagnosing the Air Leak

Air leaks on the suction side of a pool system can be particularly frustrating because they may not always produce an obvious water leak.

Instead, you may notice:

  • Air bubbles returning to the pool
  • A pump basket that doesn’t stay completely full
  • The pump losing prime
  • Excessive noise or turbulence inside the pump basket
  • Poor water circulation
  • Difficulty getting the pump to prime

In this case, the existing plumbing and valves in front of the pump were allowing air into the system.

Replumbing the Front of the Pump

Once the source of the problem was identified, we removed the problematic section of plumbing and replumbed the area directly in front of the pump.

The repair also included replacing the existing valves so the system could have properly functioning shutoffs and reliable connections.

This type of repair is often preferable to simply trying to patch an individual connection when multiple components in the same section have become problematic.

Testing the Completed Repair

After completing the replumbing and valve replacement, the system was tested to make sure the pump was able to prime properly and operate without the previous air leak.

A proper repair isn’t just about making the plumbing look better — the goal is to restore reliable water flow and proper pump operation.

Is Your Pool Pump Pulling Air?

If you’re seeing air bubbles, losing prime, or having trouble getting your pool pump to stay primed, there may be a suction-side air leak somewhere in the plumbing.
